Let me start by saying 60 minutes in line at one precinct cannot foretell the outcome of any election. But, having voted in the same Elk Grove precinct for 14 years and the same polling place for at least the last eight, tonight could prove to be a difficult one for GOP's and perhaps some Elk Grove incumbents.

I just finished voting after waiting in line for almost an hour. I am not complaining, in fact this has been a shot-in-the-arm we all need to renew faith in our system.

This is the longest I have ever waited to vote for any election any place I have lived since I started voting in 1976. The most amazing thing to me was a majority of the people voting in my generally conservative suburban middle-class precinct were by appearance 25 or younger.

If we are to believe national pollsters, the Obama-McCain race has drawn most of these young voters out. How will this impact the local incumbents?

Does this help someone like Bill Durston? How about our Elk Grove races - will the young Obama supporters be as attentive to down-ballot candidates and vote for say Democrat Maestas over Republican Scherman or Detrick over Leary?

How about those who faithfully vote. Will they be caught up in a kind of sweep-the-bums-out attitude ala 1994 and take their wrath out on local incumbents?

As the evening unfolds it will be interesting to see how the vote breaks for the local challengers to the incumbents. In either case, it is great to see so many young people at the polls.

High turnouts of young voters will mean a KT victory. Young voters are mostly college students and have a strong need for jobs when they graduate. They would be more leaning towards their fellow college instructor, KT. We will know when polls close at 8:00 pm PST. The KT’s campaign is counting on this voting block to come out.
