A reader posted the following comment in response to our analysis and projection for the Jim Cooper-LaWanna Montgomery race. Here is the comment in its entirety:
You did a fair assessment of District 1 city council race. Continue doing the good work you do. Democracy is best when results are not predictable. Although all logic points to Cooper, the voters have been put through many challenges in these troubled days. They will make their elected officials accountable for their action. Cooper will win by a good margin. But don't count La Wanna out yet. Black votes make up 1/3 of the ethnic voting block and with Obama in the presidential race, most of the African-American voters will come out in drove. Many of them may not like Captain Cooper, and La Wanna has been sending a message of change like Senator Obama for his presidential bid. I say District 1 is a toss up! But Cooper holds a lead because he is an incumbent. Being an incumbent these days is troubling.

Our reader makes some excellent points. Perhaps Montgomery can ride Obama's coattails.

That would truly be historic (in Elk Grove at least) for a candidate so far down the ballot to be swept into office over an incumbent. We'll be watching.
