Elk Grove Implements Traffic Calming Measures

ELK GROVE, CA – The City of Elk Grove's Police Department recently implemented a powerful new tool that will have a significant impact in reducing the number of speeding vehicles near local schools. With the recent installation of four speed calming radar signs near local schools, the police department believes that there will be a dramatic increase in driver compliance with posted speed limits.

The speed calming signs detect approaching cars and automatically display to drivers their actual driving speed. This display acts as a reminder to drivers and refocuses their attention on their current speed, causing them to reduce their speed if needed. All of this information is captured by the devices and is reviewed by the police department.

"We are positive that these traffic calming measures will have a positive impact in the area,” said Elk Grove Police Traffic Supervisor Sergeant Dan Davis. "We are working in partnership with the Elk Grove Unified School District to ensure that motorists obey the speed laws in school zones. These permanently mounted speed calming displays will provide data to the department which helps us determine if more enforcement is required in that particular area.”

The displays are mounted on a pole, together with a sign that reminds drivers of the legal speed limit during school-zone hours. Using the display’s internal scheduling capabilities, the department has the ability to adjust the units to reflect the 25 miles per hour limit when students are present. During non-school times, the signs revert back to normal operation.

Each of the displays were purchased with funds made available through a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
