Press release from the City of Elk Grove

ELK GROVE, CA – Construction on the Sheldon Interchange, currently the region’s largest active capital improvement project, has reached a significant milestone. Beginning January 13, 2009, weather permitting, the new south half of the Sheldon Road/State Route 99 overpass will permanently open to traffic. The new overpass will accommodate four lanes of traffic (two lanes in each direction). Associated with this traffic switch are temporary detours, as one of the northbound on-ramps will continue to be under construction.

Motorists traveling eastbound on Sheldon Road seeking access to northbound 99 are advised to plan alternate routes beginning January 13, 2009 (northbound 99 on-ramp access remains open to westbound Sheldon Road traffic). Four detour options (detailed in the attached map) will direct motorists to the northbound 99 on-ramps at the Calvine Road Interchange:

1. Bruceville Road north, right on Calvine Road to northbound 99 on-ramp
2. West Stockton Boulevard north, right on Bruceville Road, right on Calvine Road to northbound 99 on-ramp
3. East Stockton Boulevard north, left on Power Inn Road, left on Calvine Road to northbound 99 on-ramp
4. Power Inn Road north, left on Calvine Road to northbound 99 on-ramp

These recommended detours will be in effect until the northbound onramp is completed in February 2009, weather permitting.

Built in the 1950s, the Sheldon Road overpass was overdue for much-needed improvements. The new interchange (funded by Measure A, federal/state agencies, and development impact fees) will improve the flow of traffic by adding four additional lanes (as well as turn lanes) on the overpass. Along with other improvements, this allows for much needed traffic relief and enhanced safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Completion of the entire project is targeted for fall 2009.
