A slow paced love story
A science fiction enfused love triangle story, that had so much potential in regards to a unique plot and authenticity. Yet, Never Let Me Go, never actually gets anywhere in regards to the amazing question it poses, what if we bred humans to harvest their organs?

The story is drab and slow moving, to a point that certain facts is being reiterated. Yes, Kathy loved Tommy first, yes Ruth liked Tommy second, and yes Tommy is a dumb- as- fudge character. Most of the characters are one dimensional, in a world were their own organs do not belong to them, they in turn just mostly take it lying down (literally.) Maybe this movie showcases hopelessness in all its gratuitous boringness, but maybe it would have helped if the characters fought the system just a little. I would have loved to see what would happen if they did not get back home to scan their bracelets on the door for attendance check. If it were some type of futuristic eventuality, then wouldn't it be easy to just let some clones just slip out and make new ones? The deeper meaning to this story is that death is an eventuality that we must all embrace, for it is part of life. Most of the clones have already known this fact, but the ironic twist is, they have to accept death for others to live.
Great looking cast, with already promising careers. The only stand out performance to this boring film was that of Keira Knightly as Ruth. The only one of the characters to show anger, cruelty, and eventual kindness. The other two, Andrew Garfield (Tommy) and Carey Mulligan (Kathy) gave flat lining performances. Andrew had more potential but the character did not give him enough to work with, to fully showcase his talent much like he had in The Social Network. I am not much of a fan as far as Carey Mulligan is concerned, she plays the same character in different movies, and this character was basically the same one in An Education.
Based on a novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, and Directed by Mark Romanek famous for Michael and Janet Jackson's uber expensive Scream video. The movie is set mostly in the countryside of England, is mainly set in a not so distant future. The trio were born into a private school where they live and learn until they turn eighteen. Hense they get sent to another part of the country side to a place called "The cotteges." In the "Cotteges" there they live like co-ops, growing their food, harvesting their crops etc.. etc..
Growing up, Tom and Kathy were close, yet Ruth manages to lure Tom into a puppy love situation until they grow into adulthood. Kathy then begrudgingly leaves "The cotteges" to avoid the tension created by her love for Tom. Seemingly like a modern spin on a Jane Austen romantic novel, we get this one quirky spin, the fact that the characters are clones doomed to have their organs harvested. One by one they die due to the constant extractions of their organs. There may have been a reason for the twist, but the reason was lost in film translation. I am sure this film follows that of any other movies adapted from a book. I am sure Kazuo Ishiguro's novel may have made more sense than what the movie was willing to represent.
In either case, the acting was stagnant, and the flow of the movie was slow. Very.
Nothing of it screams watch worthy. The shock value of a dystopian society is sorely unused, and the conflict with the characters do not rouse any feeling of intimacy between the film and its viewers. I sat there not wanting to know anymore about these characters as though they had no more personalities to try and peel them out of.
All in all I would give this A 2.5 out of 5 hearts. It would have been lower if Keira Knightley was not in the movie, the only somewhat saving grace of the film.
Next week I will be reviewing Beastly... a love re-tell of Beaty and The beast. With Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens.
