Elk Grove City Council Member Sophia Scherman has announced a major fundraiser scheduled on Wednesday, June 23 at Elk Grove's McConnell Estates Winery.
Scherman, one of the Elk Grove city's charter council members has openly stated that she expects the district she represents will be drawn out of existence as part of the the city's reapportionment process that will occur prior to the 2012 election.
To continue with her political career, Scherman's entry in the 2012 state assembly raises some intriguing questions.
Is Scherman hoping to be "drawn" out of existence from the city council in 2012 as a sort of face-saving exercise? Although she has won her seat in three different elections, she has never been elected by a majority of voters.
Given her lack of accomplishments or initiatives over the course of almost 12 years on the city council and the general acramony that festered under her term as mayor in 2010, it may even occur to Scherman she is vulnerable to be voted out.
That would be an inglorious end to her Elk Grove political career. It would be better to roll the dice and try to win the Republican nomination to face Alyson Huber for the assembly.
Even if Scherman looses in the primary, she can leave Elk Grove politics without having been thrown out by voters. If she does make it through the primaries and faces Huber in 2012, who knows, maybe she could win - stranger things have happened.
In either case it will have been better to be drawn out of the city council than voted out.
One potential problem for Scherman might also be that given her close physical proximity to her political protege Patrick Hume, there is a good chance both teacher (Scherman) and student (Hume) could end up residing in the same district. Unless one of them moves (Hume has already done this to run in 2006) or runs for mayor, who would bow out - teacher or pupil?
While there are several other permeation's that can occur based on how city council districts are drawn, primary results and filing deadlines in 2012, it looks as though Scherman's days on the Elk Grove City Council are numbered.
