In an effort to cut down on so-called distracted driving, Elk Grove Police in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies will be conducting a traffic enforcement operation tomorrow focusing on distracted drivers.
Officers will be patrolling Elk Grove looking for drivers who are driving distracted. Distracted driving may involve any activity that diverts a driver’s attention away from safely operating a motor vehicle and most commonly this involves talking on a cellular phone or texting.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to be involved in an injury related collision. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed on U.S. roadways and an estimated 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving.
The Elk Grove Police Department is hoping that by publicizing its increased enforcement efforts, fewer drivers will risk fine, injury or death by driving while distracted. The fine for a first time texting or hand-held cell phone violation, according to the Sacramento County Vehicle Code Infraction Fines Schedule, is $166.00.

I was pooled over today for talking on the cell phone and all I did was talk using mt blue tooth in the car and was holding the phone to dial a number.....increased enforcement efforts are great when they are implemented correctly and not by pooling people over randomly to increase their numbers!
Who polices these officers as the speed through the neighborhoods talking on their cell phones? Will EGPD pull over a CHP officer talking on their cell? Just sayin...
Law Enforcement is exempt from the cell phone law while in the daily course of doing their job.
