Former Elk Grove Mayor jumps into Sacramento County Supervisor's race

UPDATED 12:15 |

Following the lead of Jaclyn Moreno, a former mayor of Elk Grove announced this morning his candidacy for the District 5 seat on the Sacramento Board of Supervisors.

Gary Davis, who served on the Elk Grove City Council for 10 years, announced on his Facebook page that he will seek the seat currently occupied by Supervisor Don Nottoli. Although he has not announced his intentions, Nottoli is not expected to run for an eight-term in 2022.

In his announcement, Davis said that his family situation allows him to again run for elected office. Davis served on the Elk Grove City Council for 10 years starting in 2006.

Davis' statement said in part, "As a former Elk Grove Mayor, Council Member, small business owner, and lifelong Sacramento County resident, I know the challenges ahead in a post-COVID Sacramento County."

In 2012 Davis was elected as the city's first directly elected mayor. Although he was running for a third two-year term in 2016 and was unopposed in 2014, he dropped out of that race under still-mysterious circumstances.

His announcement comes just hours after another candidate for the District 5 seat, Cosumnes Community Services District Director Jaclyn Moreno, formally announced her candidacy. Reliable sources report that previous to their announcements Davis and Moreno have been calling various elected officials and members of the donor seeking support.

Although he has not held elected office since 2016, Davis, who was considering a run for Elk Grove mayor in 2020, has maintained his campaign finance committee. According to the most recent filing with the Elk Grove City Clerk's office, Davis has $38,313 as of December 31, 2020.

Another elected official exploring a run for the office is Elk Grove Vice Mayor Stephanie Nguyen. While she acknowledges interest in the position, Nguyen has stressed out of respect to Nottoli, she will not formally announce a candidacy until he states his electoral intentions.

District 5 is the largest geographic supervisorial area in the county and includes Elk Grove, Galt, Isleton, Rancho Cordova, and large portions of unincorporated Sacramento County. Nottoli has represented the area since 1994 and is the longest-serving current member of the Board of Supervisors.

This particular one will be amusing to watch. His skeletons will be falling out of the closet so fast, it will look like a cross between the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Disneyland's Haunted Mansion!

Jaclyn and Gary are just like Donald Trump - they are both transactional.

When it suited her, Jaclyn was loyal to Steve Ly until it was no longer advantageous. She should have spoke up in real time when she was being harassed. She was also, supposedly, mentored by Gary when she first entered politics.

Gary, well he has been transactional with everyone who was in his sphere at one time or another. Enough said on that.

Who's next? I'm betting there will be 12 candidates by the filing deadline. No viable (trustworthy / ethical / hardworking) candidate as of yet. - Keep 'em coming.

Steve Ly need not apply. See requirements above.:)

Elk Grove City Council member Pat Hume stated when he was kicking of his 2018 campaign that this would be his last four years on the city council.

Asked about his future after 2022, didn't Hume state he wouldn't mind running for Don Nottoli's seat?

Grab the popcorn folks!

I guess Mr. Davis got tired of spending so much time with his family (his stated reason for bowing out of the EG mayoral race a few years ago). Time to find a new hobby to fill up his time while getting handsomely compensated. Right up his alley.

Much too early to sign on now, we're all suffering from campaign fatigue in the time of COVID.
