At their Wednesday, January 25 meeting, the Elk Grove City Council unanimously approved the removal of three billboards that a larger electronic one will replace. The three old and one new replacement billboard are on the city's southside along northbound Highway 99 and Grant Line Road.
The three billboards that will be removed are located at East Stockton Blvd. and Elk Grove-Florin Road, Grant Line north of the railroad crossing, and East Stockton Blvd. north of Grant Line Road. The new electronic billboard will be placed on the Cosumnes Fire Department training facility on East Stockton Blvd, south of Grant Line Road, and will be visible from both directions along Highway 99.
The electronic billboard will have a surface area of 1,3440 sq. ft., while the three being removed have a total area of 1,536 sq. ft. Unlike the other large monument billboards along Highway 99 that limit advertisements to businesses located within one mile of the structure, the new billboard will be available to any advertiser.
As part of the agreement with the billboard operator Outfront Media, 11 percent of the advertisements will be given to public services announcements from the City of Elk Grove and Cosumnes Community Services District. The display face of the billboard cannot exceed 68 feet, and the height of the support structure is limited to 80 feet.
Outfront Media representative Kevin Johnson said the structure is expected to be operational in late September 2023.
