Regional sections deemed 'unprofitable' set to be cut; Elk Grove bureau to stay open for now

In yet another sign of industry weakness, McClatchy Inc. announced that it will kill nine regional sections from the Sacramento Bee effective October 2.

The regional sections, which includes Elk Grove, are being closed as part of McClatchy's corporate-wide restructuring program meant to lower cost in the face of declining circulation and advertising revenues. Last month McClatchy cut 87 jobs at their flagship publication, The Sacramento Bee.

This cut is part of a broader move to reduce staffing company-wide by 10%. In a published story the Bee said that it would keep regional bureaus in Elk Grove, Folsom and Roseville open "for the time being."
