Detrick, Cooper also endorsed by the Sacramento Bee
Today the Sacramento Bee endorsed Katherine Meastas in her bid to unseat two-term incumbent Sophia Scherman for Elk Grove's district district five city council seat.
In what can only be described as a rebuke of Scherman, The Bee said in it's endorsement of Maestas that Scherman had "too often gone along with council actions that were not in the city's best interests."
The endorsement also said that "Maestas' independence and advocacy for responsible land planning would serve Elk Grove well."
The Bee also endorsed Steve Detrick in his bid to unseat two-term incumbent Mike Leary. Of Detrick, The Bee said "He makes a convincing case he could restore civility and transparency to the council, and is campaigning on a platform of improved public safety and an end to leapfrog growth."
The Bee's nod for Detrick come on top of several other high profile endorsement in his bid for the district three seat. The endorsement noted that Leary's "brash behavior got him into trouble in 2003."
The only incumbent receiving an endorsement was Jim Cooper who, the editorial noted, along with Leary was the subject of a Sacramento County Grand Jury report. That report "concluded that Cooper and Leary inappropriately engaged in discussions over a contract involving their employer, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, and were abusive toward staff and council members who questioned their actions."
The endorsement went on to say that Cooper's opponent, LaWanna Montgomery, "hasn't demonstrated she's prepared for the job."
