Elk Grove Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that happened early Tuesday night and two related narcotic arrests.
The first incident was the drive-by shooting which triggered the spate of arrests. According to police reports, an occupied house on the 8500 block of Jasmine Court in central Elk Grove was shoot at and hit by two gunmen in a car. A witness to the shooting identified two vehicles leaving the scene.
Officers found a matching vehicle and initiated a vehicle stop. A search of the vehicle found a concealed loaded handgun and several ecstasy pills.
The witness to the shooting positively identified the vehicle police had stopped as the one involved in the drive-by shooting. Police arrested Bihn Vang, 21, the driver of the vehicle. Also arrested was Michael Tran, 19, who was found to be in possession of ecstasy.
In the course of the investigation, officers questioned suspect Gia Huynh, 21, at a residence in 9300 block of Elk Grove-Florin Rd. Huynh told officers he did not live at this residence.
Officers reported they could smell strong odor of burning and un-burnt marijuana. Huynh admitted to officers that his vehicle may have been involved in the earlier drive-by on Jasmine Court.
After detaining Huynh, police searched the residence and found approximately 386 grams of marijuana and $350 in cash. Huynh was arrested
Less than an hour later, police stopped a vehicle associated with the drive-by. During the stop, K-9 ‘Shadow’ sniffed the exterior of the suspect’s vehicle and alerted officer to the presence of a controlled substance.
Police arrested suspect Thanh Tu, 22, for possession of 67 ecstasy pills and a small amount of marijuana.
