District facing $38 million shortfall
The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) said on Tuesday that given the state’s budget problems and the continuing recession, the district must identify $38 million in ongoing cuts over the next three years.
Additionally, the district must make an immediate $10 million cut for the 2008-2009 year. The district says these cuts will not involve any layoffs.
EDUSD superintendent Stephen Ladd has requested that any cuts be made while prioritizing cleanliness, keeping personnel before things, safety and security and academic programs.
The district plans to use cash reserves it has built the last several years and will now dip into those funds to make up shortfalls. The district expects these moneys to fund several previously identified programs to be funded through 2010-2011 school year.
The district had planned for class reduction for kindergarten through 3rd grade, and the elimination of library, administration and other staff positions.
Even with these cuts, the district still has identified $4 million in one-time and $12.2 million in ongoing reductions for the 2009-2010 school year. The district has until March 15 to legally notify 84 certified employees (including teachers, counselors and other professional positions) and 190 classified employees they face potential laid-offs.
Of the 190 classified employees, more than half are unrelated to the district budget and are funded through grants that are set to expire.

Why do we have to lay off our hard working teachers when Steven Ladd, who is the Elk Grove Unified School District Superintendent, makes over 100k a year. Not fair to our HARDWORKING/UNDER PAID TEACHERS.
Yup, lay him off so three teachers can keep there jobs, remember teachers teach, and kids need to be taught. Teachers are are underpaid to begin with.
I totally agree! They need to tighten there own belts before they start firing teachers! Trade in the Mercedes!!! If the board alone would even temporary take a cut then would could save several jobs!!! I don't want this to affect our kids learning. Private school here we come!!!
Having volunteered at several levels in the EG schools I can tell you only a few teachers really care about "THE KIDS." And they're usually the ones not whining about money. That's union mularkey. They're benefits are the best period! Besides-likes some one going into the military right now- they weren't drafted. They know what they're up against.
Benefits are the best? That is comical.
I am against them laying off Teachers and making bigger classroom sizes because I believe that it seriously messes with our kids future, and considering that our kids are OUR FUTURE makes this even more scary, but I am curious through all of this why nobody is questioining the safety of our students getting to and from school on the School Bus and why no one has taken in to account how many kids and parents depend on them safely being transported to school. The last time E.G.U.S.D. had layoffs transportation was hit very badly and they took 20 plus routes out of West Laguna alone, and thats not counting on the increase in walking distance for our K-6 students. I just want to throw out there that this affects our kids safety getting to and from school and the number of MORE routes that they are considering doing away with this year. Yes our teachers are VERY IMPORTANT don't get me wrong, but last time we decided not to get rid of teachers but to endanger our kids by them walking long distances to school, which to me as a parent scares the hell out of me. We all need to fight for our kids for their education and safety.I no longer have kids that go to school they have all graduated 2 of my girls from E.G.U.S.D., but as a parent and grandparent I am concerned for ALL of our kids safety to and from school and their education. Just something else to think about........
