Although rainy weather has swooped down on Elk Grove in the last several days, the weather held long enough for the Western Regional Collegiate Waterski Championships to be held at Elk Grove’s Shortline Lake on October 10 and 11.

Located off Sheldon Road, Short Line Lake hosted collegiate waterskiing teams representing 13 institutions. Among the competing athletes competing were Elk Grove’s Brian and Nick Detrick, representing Saint Mary’s of Moraga and San Diego State University respectively.

The Detrick brothers had mixed results with Brian winning the western regional championship in the men’s Slalom event. The win will advance him to the nation championship competition.

While Nick’s performance helped the SDSU team advance to the national finals, a knee and ankle injury he suffered on his final ski jump of the day will keep from competing in those events.

While the event may have occurred with little local fanfare, local restaurants and innkeepers undoubtedly where happy to handle the influx of athletes, coaches and fans. Noting the event during the most recent city council meeting, council member Steve Detrick noted the spending was a welcomed shot-in-the-arm for local merchants.

Council member Detrick and his wife Jan are the parents of Brian and Nick. “We are very proud of both Brian and Nick,” he said.
