During the Wednesday night Elk Grove City Council meeting, not only will be two members take a second oath of office, but the council will decide who will be Mayor and Vice Mayor for the next 12 months.

Current council members Gary Davis and Pat Hume, both of whom won second four-year terms, will take their oath. Immediately following the oath, all five council members will get to the business of selecting who will be Mayor and Vice Mayor.

In the past, the person holding the Vice Mayoral position has generally been selected to be Mayor. Steve Detrick is the current Vice Mayor.

With only one meeting for December, the council will also see a full agenda that includes four public hearing items and eight agenda action items.

Yes, the incumbents are back, one with 57% of the voters saying yes (Davis), and the other (Hume) with 56% of the voters saying no.

If ever there was a referendum for 50% plus one, this is it. Gary Davis, along with Jim Cooper and Steve Detrick, are the only three who won by a majority of the vote. Pat Hume and Sophia Scherman have been voted in with less than a majority, Hume twice and Scherman three times.

Anyone see the irony here? Hume and Scherman, peas in a pod!
