Neglected pools are perfect breeding grounds
After weeks of wet weather and mild temperatures, the sun is finally out and the warm temperatures expected over the weekend will also mean more mosquitoes.

“The late spring rain and above average rainfall for this year has left a lot of standing water” said David Brown, manager of the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District. “As the warming trend continues we will see many more mosquitoes in the next few days” said Brown. The combination of excess water and warm temperatures create the ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed.

In addition to vacant homes with neglected swimming pools, the District is also encountering mosquito problems around homes with raised foundations. “We’ve found that with the excess rain, water is collecting underneath the homes creating a mosquito breeding source” said Brown. “We urge the public to do their part and report any of these types of issues to us so we can address the situation before it becomes a bigger problem.” Residents are also asked to drain any stagnant water around their yard in buckets, bird baths, pet dishes and any other containers.

As the beginning of summer moves closer and the number of mosquitoes go up, this will also mean an increased risk of West Nile virus. The disease, which can be transmitted by infected mosquitoes that feed on infected birds, appears to be permanently established in our area. To date, one bird has tested positive in Sacramento County. The public is encouraged to help track down West Nile Virus by reporting all dead birds, (especially crows, jays or magpies) and squirrels. An online dead bird and squirrel report can be submitted at www.westnile.ca.gov
