A proposed development at Sheldon & E. Stockton Blvd. seeks an offsite freeway billboard.
The City of Elk Grove will conduct a workshop to discuss the possibility of changing zoning ordinances to allow billboards signs in the vicinity of state freeway interchanges identifying businesses in Elk Grove.

The stated purpose of the meeting is to gather public input on the proposed changes. Currently the city does not permit large signs along freeways in the city and limit signs to identifying only businesses that face the freeway.

The issue was originally raised at the March 28 Elk Grove City Council meeting when Elk Grove real estate developer Gil Moore asked for consideration to place a billboard on Highway 99 for his proposed development which is located on Sheldon Road and East Stockton Blvd. Because this parcel is not directly adjacent to Highway 99, no sign for the development would be permitted adjacent to the freeway.

At the meeting, staff will present an overview of the issues, current regulations and a summary of what other jurisdictions in the region allow. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions, provide comments and participate in a live polling exercise.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 8400 Laguna Palms Way in Elk Grove. For more information, contact Planning Manager Christopher Jordan at 478-2222 or cjordan@elkgrovecity.org.

What this workshop appears to be is a way of giving the public a way to express their thoughts on a decision that has probably already been made. Mr. Moore didn't make large cash contributions to city council members to have this part of his project rejected.

Money talks and when it speaks, our city council listens.

Wait....wasn't there a great deal of time and public input on the current sign ordinances in place?....how much in staff time is being spent on this workshop for what is probably already decided? Yes our city leaders have become very transparent....and welcome resident input and it all costs taxpayers a lot more for this kind of transparency. Plus it has become insulting! I almost prefer the original council...at least they didn't hide behind the symbolism of transparency...they just were not.

We have a sign ordinance...what is the purpose of re-visiting it? One request by one developer and the staff/city schedules a workshop? I don't get that kind of attention when I call city hall about a concern. Interesting how/who the city jumps for. Makes a reasonable person go "hummmm?"

Well since our councilman doesn't seem to care about our area any longer, we might as well give Walmart a call and see if they are still interested in the corner of Power Inn and Sheldon Roads!!!!!

Yes I think that would be a good location for a wal mart. and all they have to do is give him the money for his current election.
