This mornings announcement that retail sales dropped for three months in row, the first three month decline since the depths of 2008, came as yest another sign of a weak economy.

Dollar Tree at Promenade?

At least one retail analyst sees the future of department stores and specialty shops, typical anchors and tenants of large shopping centers, as bleak.

"The American consumer is going to continue to get poorer," noted retail analyst Howard Davidowitz said. "They're going to shop at the places that are cheapest."

Davidowitz cited TJ Maxx, Ross, Dollar Tree and Dollar General as retailers that are cheapest and this is where Americans will shop as the economy continues to languish.

So as we quickly approached the fourth anniversary of the halt of construction at the Elk Grove Promenade, unless there is a sudden and huge turn around in consumer spending and a sea of new residential rooftops appear in Elk Grove, don't expect to see a Macy's in Elk Grove. The best we can hope more is maybe a mega Dollar Tree.
